Woman dies on her honeymoon after eating ‘poisoned’ fish
Christine Fensome was celebrating her nuptials on a luxury trip Mexico with her new husband when she fell ill on September 27.
On the night before she died the 54-year-old was said to have eaten fish with high levels of mercury – which may have caused her organs to shut down.
After leaving the restaurant the newlyweds went back to the hotel, but Chris woke up with “terrible sickness and diarrhoea with funny sounds coming from her throat”.
As Chris went to have a shower, Andy called a hotel porter who summoned a doctor.
Her condition deteriorated and she was rushed to hospital – but died 10 minutes after arriving.
Her three children Brad, 33, Richard, 30 and Hayley, 29, say their mother struggled to get over the loss until meeting Andy seven years ago.
They say new love Andy Bennetts, 58, had taught her to “love again” and the pair tied the knot on September 17 before jetting off to South America for their honeymoon.
Christine’s mum Sybil, 79, from Hereford, said her daughter died 10 minutes after arriving at a Mexican hospital when she fell ill from eating fish at a restaurant.
She said: “They had gone out to a restaurant for a meal before they went and watched a show and Chris had fish, but I don’t know what sort.
“She made it to the show and they had a nice evening by all accounts before going back to the hotel.
“They were going on a day trip the next day and Chris managed to pack a rucksack ready for morning as she always likes to pack everything but the kitchen sink.
“Then they went to sleep but Andy says she woke up in the night with terrible sickness and diarrhoea with funny sounds coming from her throat.
“Chris went off to have a shower and Andy eventually called a hotel porter to the room and they called a doctor.
“She just got worse so an ambulance took her to hospital and within 10 minutes of arriving the doctors came out and told Andy she had died.
“Andy told us it was a heart attack that might have been caused by the fish she ate the night before, because it had high levels of mercury which apparently can be fatal.
“We are all completely devastated. It just seems to have come out of nowhere.
“She went fit and active. She went to the gym twice a week, she was not overweight or anything, it just all seems so sudden.
“Her wedding day was beautiful.
“They got married at Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Burghill and it was a gorgeous day. We sat outside because it was so warm.
“It was a fairytale white wedding and Chris did not stop smiling all day.
“And then this happens less than two weeks later. It just doesn’t seem fair at all.
“I think they were going to travel around Mexico and other parts of South America but I don’t know where they were when she died.
“We are still all in shock and looking for answers ourselves. We want to know exactly what has happened.”
Daughter Hayley said the family are still trying to come to terms with their loss.
She said: “Everyone says to me ‘stay focused, stay strong, keep going for your mum and dad.’
“But it is hard. I used to cry to mum that my dad would not be able to walk me down the aisle and she would tell me that she would be there to walk me down the aisle.
“But now I haven’t got anyone.
“She would talk to anyone. People met her once and fell in love with her.
“She would do anything for any of us.
“She loved her life for us. She tried so hard to be both mum and dad.
“We can’t really grieve our mum as we don’t know how [she died] or why.”
Just two days before she died Christine posted photographs on Facebook showing the couple enjoying their honeymoon in Cancun.
She uploaded a snap from the luxurious Maroma Beach Riviera and wrote: “Just having a amazing rain storm with thunder. Had to take cover in the bar ! Met some amazing people laughed so much I’m aching !”
Days earlier she also posted pictures from Puerto Morelos of the couple enjoying cocktails by the pool and their honeymoon suite.
And prior to their wedding on September 16 Chris spoke of her excitement at marrying Andy and uploaded a picture of the pair with the caption “Won’t b long ! Xx MR B x”
Husband Andy, who works in insurance, said: “I’m sorry. I’m just not ready to talk about what happened.”
Christine, from Burghill, Herefordshire, was described as being a “fit and active” regular gym-goer who doted on her five grandchildren.
Hayley said when their father died Christine had struggled to come to terms with the shock and became a recluse.
She added: “Our mum didn’t come out of the house for five years. She couldn’t get going.
“But she found her feet again slowly and found happiness at the end.
“She just looked beautiful [on her wedding day]. It was a lovely day and the sun was shining.”
Son Richard said: “The fact she went from happy to dark times and finally got happiness again and then this.
“It is too much to take in. It is a major shock.
“Mum stuck us all together. She was the glue and now she has gone.”

Christine had started working as an office administrator at Hartwell Ford a few months ago.
She also leaves behind her mum Sybil Bowyer, her brother James Bowyer, and sister Marion Bevan.
Her funeral will be held on October 21 at St Paul’s Church in Tupsley, Hereford.
Richard added: “She didn’t have the ending she deserved for what she gave to life but she is going to have the farewell she deserves.”
